Planning ahead

A thoughtful way to care for the people you love

Making plans for your funeral is something many people choose to do quietly and with care. It gives your family clear direction when the time comes and helps reduce confusion or worry during what will already be a difficult time.

At North East Funerals, we support families in recording their wishes and putting the right steps in place. There’s no pressure, no payment required, and no commitment until you’re ready.

You can talk to us about your plans in person, over the phone, or request a planning pack to fill out in your own time.

Why Pre-Plan

When someone passes away without a plan in place, families are often left asking the same question: “Is this what they would have wanted?”

Pre-planning helps avoid that uncertainty. You can make decisions while you are well and thinking clearly. Your loved ones won’t need to make choices on your behalf or guess what you might have preferred.

Many people also choose to set funds aside to cover their funeral costs in advance. This is completely optional, but for some, it’s a practical step that brings peace of mind.

What You Can Plan

There are no rules about how much you need to decide in advance. Some people choose to record just a few key wishes. Others plan the whole service from start to finish.

Here are a few things you may like to consider:

  • Burial or cremation
  • A preferred cemetery or resting place
  • Chapel, church, or another venue
  • Music, readings, or special touches
  • Who you’d like to lead the service
  • Who should be notified
  • Any cultural or spiritual traditions
  • Floral preferences or requests
  • Who should speak, and what stories to share

You don’t need to have all the answers. Our Care Consultants can help guide you through the decisions and answer any questions you may have.

Setting Aside Funds

If you want to go a step further, we can help you set up a Funeral Bond. This allows you to put aside money for your funeral expenses and can help take financial pressure off your family.

A Funeral Bond is:

  • Flexible
  • Secure
  • Government-recognised
  • Not considered part of your assets for Centrelink

You choose how much to contribute and your funds can be used only for your funeral. There are no locked-in contracts.
